The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.
Year started working with refugees in Thailand: 1980
Sectors of work: Education, psycho-social services, livelihoods, legal assistance, emergency assistance, medical services, capacity building, advocacy. People served include refugees, asylum seekers, people in detention, and migrants.
Work locations with displaced persons: Bangkok, Mae Hong Son, Ranong, Mae Sot, Wiang Haeng (Chiang Mai)
Funding sources: EC/Save the Children International, CAFOD, IRT, Misereor/KZE, Caritas network, Jesuit mission, private individuals.
Mission: To accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.
Refugee Education Programme, Mae Hong Son
Goal:To ensure the delivery of quality inclusive education and training for refugees in Ban Mai Surin Camp and Ban Mai Nai Soi Camp, and to enhance skills and livelihood opportunities for refugees.
Activities: JRS supports the Karenni Education Department (KnED) in provision of the following educational programmes: Primary Education (Kindergarten – 4th Standard); Secondary School Education (5th – 10th Standard); Special Education (inclusive and out-of-school); Home-School Liaison; Curriculum Development; Teacher Training; and vocational training, non-formal education and adult literacy.
Sustainable Livelihoods Programme, Mae Sot, Tak
Goal: To empower migrants and migrant organisations in Mae Sot to become more self-reliant and have sustainable livelihoods.
Activities: Livelihood activities, capacity building, emergency assistance, advocacy
Outreach to the Shan and Lahu, Wiang Haeng, Chiang Mai
Goal: To promote educational and livelihood opportunities for the Shan and Lahu refugee communities in Wiang Haeng and Chiang Dao District, including Krung Jor Temporary Camp.
Activities: Educational support, teacher training, livelihood activities
Urban Refugee Programme, Bangkok
Goal: To support urban refugees and asylum seekers in Metropolitan Bangkok with emergency assistance and psychosocial and legal services.
Activities: Casework, community support, psycho-social counseling, legal services, emergency assistance
Immigration Detention CenterProgramme, Bangkok
Goal: To improve the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of detainees and to strengthen the protection of detainees.
Activities: Medical care, supplementary food program, social activities, legal services, assistance with voluntary return, advocacy.
Education for Migrant Children Programme, Ranong
Goal: To increase the educational opportunities of Burmese migrant children in Thai schools.
Activities: Educational support, community outreach, advocacy.
